Sun Room: for 3.5 - 5 year olds
In the Sun Room, we promote children's development and creative exploration through a rich environment, structured flexible daily schedule, and planning based on the world of young children. Our curriculum planning is driven by our understanding of child development combined with our observations of the children's interests and engagement in the natural and social world.
Our teachers support children to learn to take care of themselves, others, classroom materials, and the earth. We believe that our work with children can contribute to the development of a peaceful world, so we include anti-bias, conflict resolution, and ecology activities in our curriculum and strive to ensure our materials do not promote stereotypes. Our teachers plan activities for small groups, large group, and individual children based on the seasons, children's interests and goals, and cultural and individual celebrations such as birthdays and holidays. Within the routine each day, we offer some large group and small group activities while allowing plenty of time for in-depth child-selected play. For most of the day, children choose from a variety of materials and activities selected to promote healthy physical, mental, social and emotional development. Children are exposed to language and literacy every day through books and music in our literacy rich classroom. Weather permitting, the children spend time outside every morning and afternoon enjoying activities such as riding, climbing, throwing and catching, balancing, swinging, digging, gardening, and chasing. |
